SpaceX is moving to challenge established telecommunications giants by pursuing a massive expansion of its cellular infrastructure. According to reports, the company intends to utilize at least 80,000 different cell sites to build out its network capabilities.

This strategic push puts SpaceX in direct competition with the largest mobile providers in the United States, including T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. To achieve this scale, SpaceX is currently engaged in discussions with Crown Castle Inc., a firm that maintains one of the most extensive collections of cell towers in the country.

What it means

By securing agreements with major tower owners, SpaceX aims to bypass the traditional hurdles of building a ground-based network from scratch. This move suggests an ambition to transition from a satellite-focused provider to a full-scale mobile carrier capable of competing with terrestrial networks.
