Paramount Skydance has officially finalized its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, finalizing a massive transaction valued at $111 billion. Following the closing of the deal today, the newly formed entity disclosed its plans for its direct-to-consumer streaming portfolio, revealing that prominent services including HBO Max, Paramount+, and Discovery+ will eventually be integrated into a single unified platform.
The completion of the deal brings resolution to months of corporate maneuvering and market speculation regarding the control of Warner Bros. Discovery. The acquisition saga originally gained momentum last year when rival streaming giant Netflix publicly announced its own intention to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery. However, Netflix abandoned its acquisition efforts in February, paving the way for the creation of the combined Skydance enterprise.
The decision to combine these services will bring together assets with a long history of corporate restructuring. Discovery+ originally hit the market in 2021 under Discovery Inc., prior to that company's 2022 combination with WarnerMedia that created Warner Bros. Discovery. With this latest corporate union finalized, Discovery+ will now join HBO Max and Paramount+ in a collective migration toward a single digital destination.
While Paramount Skydance confirmed that all of its direct-to-consumer properties are slated to unify, the company indicated that the transition will take place incrementally over time rather than all at once. For now, subscribers will continue to navigate the separate platforms while the broader consolidation process moves forward behind the scenes.
