OpenCode, an open-source AI coding agent often used as an alternative to tools like Cursor and Claude Code, has suffered a security incident. Attackers successfully accessed a portion of the platform's infrastructure, allowing them to extract API keys belonging to several users.

Once the credentials were stolen, the hackers used them to generate unauthorized charges on the victims' AI accounts. This exploitation turned the tools' processing power against the users' financial interests by inflating usage costs.

Efforts to identify and neutralize the threat were complicated by the nature of the attack. The AI systems utilized by the platform repeatedly declined to analyze the malicious code involved in the breach, hindering the process of understanding the exploit.

What it means

This incident highlights a critical vulnerability in how AI coding agents manage sensitive credentials. When API keys are stored or handled insecurely, a single platform breach can lead to direct financial losses for users through the unauthorized consumption of cloud-based AI resources.
